Research and Professional Experience

Dr. Boulware is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology. She is also a core faculty member of the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology and Clinical Research. Her major research interests include chronic disease epidemiology and prevention, eliminating racial disparities in access to appropriate care for persons with chronic diseases, and identifying barriers to the delivery of appropriate care for persons with chronic diseases.

Dr. Boulware’s research focuses on improving the delivery of care for patients with chronic kidney disease through the study of patient and physician attitudes and behaviors. Her work has identified patient and physician barriers to the delivery of guideline concordant care for patients with chronic kidney disease as well as patient, physician, and population factors affecting the receipt of optimal therapies for kidney disease such as kidney transplants. Her most recent studies include 1) studies on physicians’ management and coordination of care for patients with chronic kidney disease and 2) studies to develop and test educational and behavioral interventions to improve patient decision-making about treatment options for chronic kidney disease.
