Department: Environmental Health Sciences

Director, Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences in The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health is seeking a senior leader with public health experience to serve as Director of the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future (CLF) and become an endowed professor in the Department.

The CLF is an inter-disciplinary and university-wide academic center that promotes research, uses scientific evidence to advocate for the public’s health, and develops and communicates information about the complex interrelationships among diet, food production, environment and human health. Founded in 1996, the work of the CLF advances an ecological perspective in reducing threats to the health of the public and to promote food system policies that protect health, the global environment and the ability to improve food security and sustain life for future generations.

The ideal candidate is someone who is a visionary, and a big picture and systems thinker. The qualified applicant must have demonstrated ability to work effectively within an academic institution as an educator, researcher, and/or practitioner in a field important to understanding and improving the food system; a commitment to sustaining and advancing CLF’s core mission; familiarity with, expertise related to, and appreciation of the broad aspects of the food system; a mastery of public health approaches; excellent communication and media relations skills; and recognized professional credibility within the broader food system world.

The position requires robust diplomatic skills to manage relationships internal to the CLF, the Department and School, as well as external — with other academic institutions, government agencies, NGOs, funders, and diverse communities. He/she should have a demonstrated capacity for strong and inspirational leadership and a track record as an effective manager. A strong track record of success in financial management with the skill to effectively navigate the foundation world, the ability to establish and cultivate relationships with individual donors and the ability to obtain extramural support from the public and private sectors.

The Johns Hopkins University does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, age, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin, disability, marital status, veteran status or any other occupationally irrelevant criteria. The University is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer committed to recruiting, supporting and fostering a diverse community of outstanding faculty, staff and students. Applicants sharing this goal are encouraged to apply. The University is a drug-free and smoke-free workplace.
