Research and Professional Experience

Dr. Bishai uses economics to study populations, families, and the ways in which various public health interventions, especially immunization and injury control, affect population health. His work on family economics looks at how child fostering, polygyny, and reduced certainty of paternity affect child survival. His research on the family includes studying how adults and adolescents decide whether to have extramarital sexual contact and how families cope with AIDS and STDs.

Dr. Bishai has focused much of his applied work on evaluating the potential value of public health interventions such as vaccines, injury control measures, and STD control activities. He has prepared economic models of vaccines and vaccination strategies. His work attempts to validate economic models of the value of a new vaccine with household surveys on what people would pay for a new vaccine. His current projects apply willingness to pay methods to assess the demand for meningococcal vaccine, improved ways of screening for HPV disease, improved neighborhood safety from automobile injuries, and more successful drug rehabilitation programs.
