Research and Professional Experience

My participation in research has spanned four decades extending back to the mid 1960's when I was Research Associate in the Department of Pathology at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, Pennsylvania State University, Hershey, PA.. Durnign this period Richard L. Naeye, Professor and Chair of the Department and I worked on several topic(s) surrounding the general area of vital fetal organ growth and development in mal and undernourished pregnancies. This interest led me to the School of Hygiene and Public Health and the Department of Maternal and Child Health in the early 1970's. After completing my graduate studies in public health, I became associated with Dr. David Paige, Professor of Maternal and Child Health. Our research at that time focused upon the problem of lactose intolerance in black children. In the 1980's my research interests took still another direction and I became engaged in MCH program evaluation; particularly in the area of evaluating the then in vogue Alternative Birthing Centers or ABC's. Towards the close of the decade I took still another direction and devoted my research skills and knowledge to the assessment of the functional ability and program service needs of children with specail health card needs. My interest in this special population of disabled children continues to this time. Currently I am involved in curriculum development for public health graduate students interested in children with special needs. This work has led me to work directly with Robin Chernoff MD, Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics; Dr. Henry Ireys, Assistant Professor, Maternal and Child Health; Linda Grossman MD, Department of pediatrics, University of Maryland and Michael Chapman, Director of Education, the Kennedy/Krieger Institute for Handicapped Children. These interests and work areas with special needs children have resulted in various Board of Director Appointments in the private and public sectors including the MD/DC Affiliate International Association of Infant Mental Health, Parents and Children Together, Inc. (PACT, Inc.), and the Baltimore commission on cooupational Medicine, Health and Safety, Mayor's Advisory Board on Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
