Research and Professional Experience

I currently have two diverse research interests. One is a long-standing interest in antimicrobial therapy of infectious diarrhea, and the problem of antimicrobial resistance. This research is conducted in Bangladesh, and focuses on the treatment of Shigella and V. cholerae.

A more recent interest is the prevention and epidemiology of HIV in adolescents, and evaluation of multi-dimensional prevention programs. This evaluation work is conducted in South Africa, and is centered around a program of education on health and HIV prevention, individual counseling sessions that include HIV testing, and computer training and use of computers for health education. This program is currently working in 11 secondary schools with approximately 10,000 students
