Research and Professional Experience

I am a pediatrician with subspecialty training in infectious diseases, and have worked in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Africa and Zambia. My broad research interests are the epidemiology and control of childhood infections in developing countries. My primary research interest is in understanding the impact of the HIV-1 epidemic on measles control and eradication. We collaborate with investigators in Lusaka, Zambia and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine to study the clinical, epidemiologic and immunologic interactions between measles virus and HIV-1 in hospitalized children, and the impact of HIV-1 infection on immune responses to measles vaccination in Zambian children. Current areas of research are understanding how immune reconstitution following antiretroviral therapy impacts humoral and cellular immune responses to measles vaccine.

Additional research projects include child health in complex emergencies, the effectiveness of the care of HIV-1-infected children in rural Zambia, malaria transmission dynamics and control in southern Zambia, and the impact of maternal schistosomiasis on offspring immune responses in a murine model.
