Research and Professional Experience

Currently, Dr. Strobino’s research includes studies of the: social, psychosocial, and biologic risk factors for preterm birth among African American women (Co-Investigator; NICHD)); impact of the Healthy Steps (HS) Program for Young Children (Co-Investigator; Commonwealth Fund, AHRQ), and the effect of maternal depressive symptioms on the growth of their young children (PI, MCHB) . The first study applies and tests a sociomedical model at both the individual and neighborhood level to identify the social factors that affect preterm delivery and to describe the intervening (biologic and psychosocial) pathways through which the social factors are mediated. In this project, she also is working with a colleague on studying the use of dental health care and dental hygienic practices during pregnancy among low income women. The second study focuses on the impact of enhanced services to promote development of young children in a pediatric setting on parental practices related to the development of their children and on the child’s health, behavior and use of services. The third study uses data from the national Healthy Steps evaluation to explore the relation of mother's depressive symptoms at 2-4 months to their children's growth up to age 2.

Future or Proposed Research

Dr. Strobino has recently submitted a research grant (as PI) that involves follow-up of the mothers of the HS cohort when the children are 8-9 years of age. Its objective is to study the effect of multiple roles (specifically employee and caregiver of an adult or disabled child) and of chronic health problems on the use of health and mental health services among women with children (submitted to NINR). A second grant (submitted to MCHB, Co-PI) investigates the relation of father involvment with maternal parenting practices and children's well being and whether it mediates the effect of maternal depression on these outcomes.

Dr. Strobino, along with Holly Grason, is the Director of the Maternal and Child Health Leadership Training Program. It is a core training program in the Department of Population and Family Health Sciences. Its administrative home is the Women's and Children's Health Policy Center.
