Mr. Ward is a former senior healthcare executive with more than 20 years of experience in health care finance and operations. Prior to joining the faculty, he served for a dozen years at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center which he joined in 1982 when he was selected to be the Chief Operating Officer of what was then Baltimore City Hospitals. He was a member of the Hopkins management team which operated the hospital under a contractual agreement with the City of Baltimore. Since leaving Bayview in 1994, Mr. Ward has provided a wide variety of consultative services to clients throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic States. He has worked on projects overseas in Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

The author of two textbooks and numerous articles, he has lectured widely on a variety of healthcare financial and operational subjects. In addition to the Bloomberg School of Public Health, he is on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. For over 20 years, he taught financial management at the University of Maryland School of Nursing and continues to guest lecture there. Professional affiliations include the Healthcare Financial Management Association, the American College of Healthcare Executives, and the Maryland Association of Health Care Executives.
