Research and Professional Experience

William W. Latimer, Ph.D., M.P.H. is Associate Professor in the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health, Department of Mental Health. His research program has been NIDA-funded since 1995 and focuses on the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of drug abuse disorders and HIV/AIDS, with a special focus on neurobehavioral risk factors of disease, treatment engagement, and outcome. His prevention research includes a NIDA-funded RO1 study examining neurobehavioral risk factors of HIV infection in young injection drug users, and epidemiologic studies of health and problem behavior among adolescents in the United States, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. A primary aim of Dr. Latimer's research directed toward HIV prevention focuses on evaluating a suspected causal association between neuropsychological executive dysfunction and HIV infection among young injection drug users through case-control and longitudinal studies. Dr. Latimer's international epidemiologic research focuses on cross-cultural predictors of drug use and abuse, STD/HIV-risk, delinquency, and school failure among school-based adolescents. A separate R01 project is examining the degree to which an adapted version of Integrated Family and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy prevents drug abuse among indicated middle school youths.

Dr. Latimer's treatment research focuses on evaluating neurobehavioral and process factors influencing the efficacy and effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral, family systems, and 12-Step approaches for adolescent drug abuse. Funded by NIDA's Behavioral Therapies Development Program, Dr. Latimer is currently evaluating the efficacy of a manual-based, adolescent drug abuse treatment that integrates cognitive-behavioral and family therapy components. Neuropsychological factors associated with treatment dropout and posttreatment outcomes are also examined. Dr. Latimer has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in psychiatric epidemiology, alcohol and drug epidemiology and prevention, behavioral medicine, abnormal psychology, developmental psychology, personality theory, family therapy, and social psychology.
